To Burn With WinOnCD....

My first burner

Ahh......There it was, A cheap burner catching this newbie's eye.  It was all packaged up in a CompUSA box.  This was long before I met all you guys and before I knew a thing about computers.  I had just bought my first computer a couple of months earlier.  A NEC with a PII 350.  I had heard of burners but hadn't a clue as to what it was all about.  I asked the guy who worked there why this one was so cheap and if it was a bad idea to buy it.  He told me that it was a Ricoh MP7040A packaged by compUSA.  My sister was working for Ricoh in Sparks, Nevada, at the time, so I knew Ricoh made some decent Hardware.   He also said that it came with burning software that he said "was far better than EZ CD Creator".  You guessed it, it was WinOnCD 3.6 from CeQuadrat.  So I went for it.

I got it home and opened the box and was very happy to see it said "Ricoh" on the front tray of the burner.  After installing the burner (only the second time I had been inside my computer case) without a hitch, I installed the software.  I played around with it for a few days.  Boy was it confusing at first, but after getting the hang of it, I loved it!!!!  I got to reading the manuals and it said I could use the CDRW's as a big floppy if I installed CeQuadrat's PacketCD.  So I went for it again.  After installing the software and rebooting, at the time the "PacketCD" splash screen is supposed to come up, I had my first ever Blue Screen of Death!  I hadn't a clue as to what to do.  I ended up getting the restore disc out and lost everything.  To this day, I have a bad taste in my mouth for packet writing!  Needless to say, I cut my "burning teeth" with WinOnCD.

WinOnCD is a very versatile program, though  I use it mostly for burning data.  I  also use it for copying a CD,  without any copy protection.  I use it for music from time to time, though very little,  the music burning/editing power of WinOn is one it's biggest attractions.  Go here to see just how to burn music with WinOnCD.  It is a very comprehensive how-to on burning your albums to CD by Hudzon.  It will show the ins and outs of using WinOnCD for audio.

I am using Roxio's WinOnCD 3.8 for all examples for this article.  For those of you who are wondering, Adaptec bought WinOnCD from Cequadrat.  WinOnCD is now distributed under the Roxio name.  At first glance, WinOnCD's interface was very intimidating.  But after a few hours, it became very friendly.  When you run it for the first time, it will ask you what folder you want to use for temporary storage.  I use a partition of 800 MB that I use strictly for CD images/burning.  That way, the partition is very quickly defragged.

After directing WinOn to it's temp folders, you will be greeted with a New Project window asking you what kind of CD you want to burn.

The "Favorites" tab (above ( hehehe that spelling should upset Demo )) shows the most common options, CD Copy,  ISO 9660 (Data), Multi-session, and Audio.  Click on the Data Tab and you get more options, from normal ISO to Bootable CD creation.  The Audio Tab also gives a few different options for burning music.  And the video tab (I must be honest) has options for video, for which I have never used.  The "Copy" tab gives (of course) more options for CD copying.  The "Other" tab gives the options of burning a CD image or doing a custom project.

Burning Data

To burn data, double click on the CD-Rom ISO..... icon.  The WinOnCD interface is now setup to burn any data you want from your computer, network, or any removable media to a CD.

As you can see, in the top pane is an explorer-like view.  Drag any data you want to burn from the top pane down to the lower pane.

The readout on the very bottom shows I have selected 11.6 MB, which is the equivalent of 1 minute and 19 seconds.  I can keep dragging files into the lower pane to fill up the CD.  After you have selected all the data you want to burn, click on the disc button in the lower pane on the left side.
